Palomino as a destination

After Taganga, we had lost all hope. The Colombian dream we had wished for with beautiful beaches and blue waters of the Caribbean sea were shattered. However, arriving in Palomino everything changed. We highly rate this destination and would 100% recommend adding this to your list.
It’s our last day here and it’s raining so I wanted to write up a bit about what we loved here and our last notes before making our way back to Santa Marta.
What we loved:
  • Our accommodation. Glamping was a unique, different experience that was 100x better than staying in a bog-standard hostel. Not that any of them are here as the place is over run with bamboo structured accomms and tiki huts!
  • The beach! Upon entry to the beach you have 2 options…right or left. We spend 2 days walking a different way each day and loved it. The sea breeze is strong, so it doesn’t feel like you are melting and the views are brilliant.
  • The sunset! One of the best sunsets we have seen this trip so far. From either side of the beach it is easy to find a perfect spot to sit and enjoy.
  • The people and vibe! We felt safe here, the people are friendly, and the vibe of the town is laid back, hippie and full of colour and happiness.

  • The food! So many places to eat and sample traditional Colombian cuisine. We loved – SUA, Pina Coco, any arepa off the street stalls, beach vendors selling cocada, Nice Creams and Fogon de Lena.
  • Zoe beach bar – Situated just a few minutes’ walk from the entrance to the beach, this little bar provided us with ice cold beers to watch the sunset for 3 of the nights we stayed here. Staff are pretty friendly, great DJ, WIFI (IF YOU NEED IT) and amazing views of the beach and sunset. It’s also a great spot to people watch.
  • Try a coco limon! It’s essentially lime juice blended with fresh coconut and coconut cream to make this truly delicious drink. I urge you to have 1..or 5!
What we didn’t love:
  • We really don’t have many negatives here. The electricity in town is terrible so there are a lot of power cuts. We experienced 2 while here but it didn’t bother us much.
  • Be careful of motorbikes. The street and pavement are share here and we nearly got run down a bunch of times so be very vigilant.
  • There is no ATM…bring cash! 😉
  • Stray dogs, like every town in Colombia there are so many stray dogs which we hate. However, compared to everywhere else we have been, these ones are all pretty friendly and one (which we named Sandy) came on a walk with us on our first day for 5km, never leaving Leo’s side. They are generally very friendly, but an anxious backpacker like myself freaks out very easily.
  • Oh, service is super slow here, so don’t expect anything fast – like always carry a snack in your bag and don’t reach a restaurant when you are starving as you will spend the next 40 minutes praying the next meal is yours!

Overall, we give Palomino 10/10 as a destination and highly recommend it. It’s amazing! Please contact us if you need any extra tips 😊
