ICELAND - Day 3

Day 3 already; and as cold, windy (with a questionable Summer) Iceland brings - we are loving it here. This morning we were greeted with rain, lots and lots of rain, so had a lazy morning as no one like to explore in the wet and cold. Upon leaving the accomo, the sun broke through the clouds and we were welcomed with slightly nicer weather for out drive North. Today we would be exploring Kerid, Gullfoss and Geysir – all located in the Golden circle (the main tourist route)

Our first stop was Kerid, a multi-coloured volcanic crater filled with vibrant blue water. With the overcast day the bright blue water was rather mirky and grey looking but the experience was ok overall. Unfortunately, this is one of the very few places here that costs money. It’s 400ISK pp (about $7NZD) and after walking the full crater I was desperate to get to the blue pool at the bottom, however on the way down I slipped, fell and nearly broke my arm so after quietly crying in front of about 100 people, we made our way back to the car. Not a good way to start the day.
Next on the agenda was Gullfoss waterfall, located about 40 minutes from Kerig, this waterfall is extremely impressive for its size and the force of the water. It looks like Niagara Falls and we were blown away when we got there!  It is a beautiful two-staged waterfall, but it attracts a lot of people.  *TRAVEL TIP* - The bathrooms cost 200ISK to use but if you walk straight into the restaurant there you can use them for free (just pretend you are looking for someone). We pissed around here for about an hour, taking photos for people who were in need and generally enjoying the power of the falls. It’s a shame it was juts really busy, but the gift shop and restaurant are also nice if you fancy re-mortgaging your house to buy yourself a snack or keep sake.

The last stop of the day was Geysir and here’s a fun fact for you - The word geyser comes from this very place.  Geysir is a hot spring, geothermal area along the Golden Circle and is packed with tourists but it was on the list and we wanted to see it.  Coming from New Zealand, it’s very samey as we are spoilt for choice with geothermal areas, but it was worth it as the main geyser Strokkur, shoots a large jet of boiling water every 5 to 10 minutes.  We hiked the area for about a hour and enjoyed watching the eruption / trying to get a good photo of it for about 6 times.

Tonight, we are staying in Vorsabær in a tiny house and it’s awesome! There is an outside geothermal shower and the place is just brilliant. It can be found on Air B n B under ‘little black cabin’ and is well worth it as it’s beautiful with great views. Tomorrow is our last day and we have packed a lot in so don’t feel sad about it at all…mostly because the next stop is SCOTLAND!! And I get to see my family.
