Mosselbay

We left a very windy Struis bay this morning for the 3-hour drive along the Garden route to Mosselbay.
Well, it’s perfectly perched on the edge of the Indian Ocean, and in the foothills of the Outeniqua Mountains – we have been told it’s got more attractions and adventures than you'll find in almost any other towns of its size. I was most excited to go here as it’s got 60 kilometres of beaches and more than 300 days of sunshine in every 365!

MosselBay is situated exactly half way between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth (400 km in each direction) - so it was the ideal place for us to stay, and the ideal place to do the Blaize trail. The St Blaize Hiking Trail is a wonderfully scenic combination of craggy coastline, interesting caves and rock formations, sweeping ocean views and pretty fynbos.
Starting at the Khoi San Cave at The Point, you can follow the whole coastline for 13.5 km to Dana Bay which takes about 4 hours. As we only have 1 car, our option was limited to hiking in 1 direction, so we did a quick 8km of the track (4 each way)
We read that the trail has recently been upgraded and we were impressed how easy it was to walk, with a few big steps and sandy hills. Apparently along the way there are a few spots for a cooling swim in rock pools or a small sandy beach – however we never saw any of these as the waves beneath us would easy kill you instantly if you fall or go for a swim.
We saw heaps of Hyrax again along the way and it’s funny to watch as they launch themselves off the side of the cliff face when running from you (always landing safely) but reminded me of the game Lemmings as a child.
Getting back to MosselBay we checked in to our accommodation for the evening Mosselbay Backpackers – It is amazing. Amazing location and awesome facilities. We have a pool, cheap beers and a beautiful room, also a menu breakfast too which we didn’t expect. All for 80NZD, but pricy but definitely worth it. Dinner consisted of driving to our fav supermarket ‘Pick and Pack’ just as they were closing and snapping up a wonderful 3 course yumminess for $12NZD. WINNING. We even stopped and treated ourselves to new swimsuits each! Love this town!

After a great day, we hit the hay pretty early after a few beers and watching Ted – love a good comedy!
